Conn Smythe Odds: Ranking the Top 5 Candidates After Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final

Most sports leagues will have an MVP for the series, for instance, the NBA Finals MVP, the World Series MVP, the Super Bowl MVP, etc. The NHL is different though, there is no Stanley Cup Final MVP. Instead, there is a Conn Smythe Award which is awarded for a player's performance through the entire playoffs, essentially a playoffs MVP.

So through one game of the Stanley Cup Final what do the Conn Smythe odds look like? Let's dive into it and break down the top five favorites to win the Conn Smythe.

Nathan MacKinnon Conn Smythe Odds +150 (Bet $100 to win $150)

You can probably count on one hand how many better players there are in the NHL than Nathan MacKinnon. Mackinnon had 88 points in just 65 games during the regular season and in the playoffs, he's been a scoring machine. MacKinnon has 19 points and 11 goals to his name during this Stanley Cup run. He's a star, and the team goes as he goes so it's no surprise to see him this highly regarded.

Cale Makar Conn Smythe Odds +150 (Bet $100 to win $150)

The same can be said about Cale Makar who shares the same Conn Smythe odds as Nathan MacKinnon. They are both given a 40% of winning the award. Makar leads the way with 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) while averaging an insane 27:12 of ice time per night. They run him a ton and with his skill set, you're almost left without a choice. It very much so feels like it's MacKinnon and Makar's award to lose.

Nikita Kucherov Conn Smythe Odds +550 (Bet $100 to win $550)

Nikita Kucherov put up points like nobody's business. He has 24 in 18 games in the playoffs and had over 30 points in the Lightning's last two Stanley Cup runs. He has yet to win a Conn Smythe in his career but if the Lightning come back to win the series, you can make a strong case for Kucherov's name to be called out by the commisioner.

Andrei Vasilevskiy Conn Smythe Odds +600 (Bet $100 to win $600)

Can Andrei Vasilevskiy repeat as the Conn Smythe winner? It feels unlikely, even if the Lightning do come back and win. For a majority of the playoffs, Vasilevskiy hasn't looked like himself. Still, a .926 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average is splitting hairs at that point but this is someone who had a .927 save percentage and a 1.90 goals against average to win the Conn Smythe last year.

Mikko Rantanen Conn Smythe Odds +1000 (Bet $100 to win $1000)

Mike Rantanen is fantastic. He has 19 points for the Avalanche in the playoffs and had 92 points and 36 goals during the regular season. Still, will it be enough to jump both MacKinnon or Makar to win the award? Unless he scores a cup clinching goal I think that would be very difficult but if you want to go with a longshot on Colorado instead of a chalk pick, this is probably your guy.
