2023 Stanley Cup Odds: Which NHL Team is Favored to Win the Stanley Cup?

For two years it’s been the Colorado Avalanche at the top of the odds market. They led for all of 2020, and all of 2021, and began 2022 as the favorites. However, a slow start to the year has knocked them out of the top spot. They’ve been replaced by the Boston Bruins.

The Bruins are now given +650 odds, or an implied 13.3% chance to win the Stanley Cup. A huge change, as the Bruins were given +3000 odds to win the Cup prior to opening night. In fact, Boston is the only team given at least a 10% chance to win the cup. It's not surprising as their team continues to dominate on the ice with stars including Patrice Bergeron.

Their biggest competition is their biggest rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto is given +1000 odds, or an implied 9.1% chance to bring a Stanley Cup back to Canada. They’re followed by the New Jersey Devils and the Las Vegas Golden Knights at +1300. The Devils have moved from +6500 on Opening Night.

The top-5 is rounded out by the Tampa Bay Lightning, who’re given +1500 odds. That’s an implied 6.3% chance to win their third cup in four years.

It’s strange to see the odds market swing so heavily. Over the last two seasons no matter how hot or cold teams got the odds were steady. Colorado at the top, Toronto, Vegas, Boston, and Tampa behind them, then a third tier with the Rangers, Panthers, Hurricanes, and Penguins. That’s all been disrupted this season as Colorado hasn’t just fallen out of the top spot, but out of the top five entirely. The Devils have rocketed up from a longshot to a favorite, Dallas has crashed the second tier, and the usually reliable Panthers have crashed out altogether. This much movement is incredibly strange and shows how wild the first third of the NHL season has been.
