F1 Australian GP Betting Odds: Can Lewis Hamilton Get Back on Track?
When: April 10, 10:00 AM EDT
How to Watch: ESPN
Where: Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Melbourne, Australia
Following a week off, F1 returns this week and will pop up in Australia, as practice gets underway on Thursday and the race Sunday. In its first appearance in Melbourne since 2019, F1 comes back to Australia looking much different than it did that time, as team Ferrari sits firmly in the driver’s seat of the standings.
Following back-to-back weeks in Bahrain and Jeddah in which Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both found the podium, Ferrari is now 40 points ahead of the next closest constructor with 78 points through two races. While Mercedes is the next team in the standings, modifications to F1 rules have thus far caused issues for the team, as they’ve failed to adjust adequately.
With the extra time off, should we expect to see anything different? Let’s take a closer look.

Making his F1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2007, this track is one of the Mercedes’ lead man’s favorite and I think we see that come through here this week. Earning the pole position in this race over its past six editions, Hamilton won here in 2015 and has shown a mastery of this track that few in the field have.
This year, of course, will prove more challenging than any of the past, as the Mercedes team has thus far been unable to keep pace with Ferrari and Red Bull due to the new F1 rules around car modifications. With a full week off to adjust and upgrade, however, expect the veteran Mercedes team to do just that and put a more complete product on the track this week. Said to be bringing an “upgraded package” to Melbourne this week, one of the best drivers of all time in Hamilton will no doubt not be held down for long.
And this would be the track they know amongst the best all season long.
Looking back over the past six Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes has taken the top spot in five of them, including in 2019 with Valtteri Bottas behind the wheel. With Mercede’s new driver George Russell racing well thus far with a 4th and 5th place finish through two races, don’t be surprised to see him play setup man should Hamilton be in contention come the later laps on Saturday.
Currently, 5th in the driver’s standings behind Russell, expect a more aggressive Hamilton in weeks to come, he needs points and quickly if he wishes to get his title back come the end of the season.
