Belmont Stakes: Bettors And Books At Odds Over Master Fencer
Master Fencer has attracted the attention of punters in the lead up to the Belmont Stakes, with the 13/1 outsider enjoying nearly half of the total market share.
Despite being 5th favorite behind the likes of Tacitus (5/2) and War of Will (3/1) it is the 3 year old from Japan who is being heavily backed to triumph at Belmont next week.
In relative terms, Master Fencer has been given just a 6% chance of being first past the post on 8th June - yet the money lumped on him indicates victory is eight time likelier.
The other mover on the market is War of Will, who has come in from 4/1 to just 2/1 in the space of a week, albeit remaining as second favorite.
Oddschecker spokesperson Pete Watt: “A strong performance for Master Fencer in the Kentucky Derby early this month belied 60/1 SP and he has continued to train well in the past fortnight, which may explain punters’ interest.
“The books have got wind of this activity and shortened his price – 19/1 a week ago - but there could still be some value in backing this colt, and we expect to see significantly more betting between now and the race.”
