Kentucky Derby Odds: Tiz The Law's Odds Shorten After Belmont Win

Odds-on favorite Tiz The Law did what most expected of him in the Belmont Stakes winning the first leg of this year’s Triple Crown, by four lengths after blazing down the stretch to come up from the middle of the pack.
Tiz The Law started on the morning line at 6/5 and shortened to 4/5 by race time. He was followed by second-place finisher Dr Post (7-1) and third-place finisher Max Player (14-1).
Usually the end of the Belmont Stakes would signify the end of Triple Crown season, but this year it’s the opening leg as we wait 11 weeks for The Kentucky Derby on September 5.
With Tiz The Law’s win came a predictable shift in odds for the 3-year old. Prior to Saturday’s dominating showing, UK bookmakers had Tiz The Law’s odds at +3/1, or +300 to win the Run for the Roses. Now, those same oddsmakers have the horse’s best odds at +175, or 7/4, with one UK sportsbook even listing him as short as -125, or 4/5.
There is expected to be a little more competition for Tiz The Law come September. The second favorite and winner of the Santa Anita Derby, Honor A.P., didn’t run in the Belmont but is expected to run in the Kentucky Derby.
Unfortunately for horse racing fans, another top contender for the Derby, Maxfield, has been sidelined with a non-displaced condylar fracture in his right front cannon bone and isn't expected to run.
Tiz The Law was the first New York-bred horse to win the Belmont Stakes since Forester did it in 1882.
