Ballon d'Or Odds Update: Ranking the Top 5 Candidates To Win the Award in 2021

When is the Ballon d'Or Announced?

The 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony is on Monday, 29 November.

Where will the 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony take place?

Paris, France

How is a winner chosen for the Ballon d'Or?

A panel of voters is selected, they then choose their top five players from the list of 30. The list of 30 players is established by a select group of 180 journalists from around the world to determine the top 30 candidates for the award.

The top-ranking player from each journalist's selection will receive six points, with the second-ranking player earning four points, then three, two, and one going down from the rest of their top five picks. After each member on the panel has selected their top five players for the Ballon d'Or award, the total points are calculated and added, and the player to receive the most number of points will be awarded the honor of Ballon d'Or.

On November 29 in Paris, the 2021 Ballon d'Or winner will be announced. So we are just over three weeks away from the winner being announced and we've taken a look at the latest rankings based on the latest Ballon d'Or odds. With just three weeks to go it has become just a two-man race.

1. Robert Lewandowski (-175)

Lewandowski has seen his odds cut tremendously over the last month. Just three weeks ago he was +290 trailing Lionel Messi. Now he has leapfrogged Messi as the favorite to win the Ballon d'Or. Over a month ago he was priced at +500 and I stated he would be my pick based on his consistent play in 2020-2021. Well a month later and here we are, Lewandowski is the odds on favorite. The Polish striker has been nothing short of phenomenal the last few years. Many will argue he was robbed of the award in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic canceled the award. In the 2019-20 campaign, he netted a staggering 55 goals in 47 games. This past weekend he added 2 more goals for Bayern Munich and shows no signs of slowing down. He's put together some amazing performances in Champions League netting a hat trick in Bayerns midweek match. Voters may also agree with me that he was robbed of the award in 2020 and he deserves recognition for his outstanding play.

2. Lionel Messi (+125)

Messi has seen his odds fall dramatically over the last month and that is due for the most part because of the play I just mentioned by Lewandowski. Messi, who left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, has a record six career Ballon d'Or trophies and is the most recent winner in 2019. For the first time in 2021, he's not the favorite to win. Now he is injured and has missed recent matches with PSG. This will most certainly hurt his chances especially with Lewandowski proving match after match why he deserves the award.

3. Mohamed Salah (+1400)

Salah bursted up the odds grid over the last month and a half. Just three weeks ago he was priced at +1200 to win the Ballon d'Or. He even saw his odds reach +900 at some books. Now with three weeks to go, it seems to be a two-man race for the award between Messi and Lewandowski. The Egyptian striker has made a strong case as we move deeper into the season but there's not enough time for him to make up the ground lost. He continues to score unbelievable goals every weekend for Liverpool. Salah is making a case for being the best player in the world and will make a lot of money with his new contract coming up but he won't be winning the Ballon d'Or trophy in 2021.

4. Jorginho (+1600)

Jorghino has been third in the Ballon d'Or rankings since his amazing summer but the play of Mo Salah has pushed him down the list. It might not be a popular decision if he places in the top three, but voters put more stock in trophies than statistics sometimes just as they do in other sports. The Italian star midfielder was named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year in August. He was a key cog in Italy lifting the Euro 2020 trophy this past summer. He was also a key part of Chelsea winning the Champions League and will continue to be key to Chelsea's success as they look to retain their Champions League crown and challenge for the Premier League title. Chelsea currently sits atop of the Premier League table and he is a key reason for that. His odds have lengthened tremendously moving from +650 to +1600 over the last month as we get closer to the award ceremony.

5. Karim Benzema (+1600)

The newcomer in our top five is Karim Benzema. Benzema has had a great start to the 2021-22 season with Real Madrid, scoring 9 goals and providing 7 assists in 10 LaLiga matches, more than any other player. He finished the 2020-2021 season with 30 goals but Real Madrid finished the year with no trophies. He played for the French national team for the first time in six years and helped them to a UEFA Nations League title. He continues to keep up his strong form in European soccer as he netted 2 goals this past week in Real Madrid's 2-1 Champions League victory. He is missing the trophies but his individual performance has been one of the best in the world over the last year.
