For the first time in the 22 editions of the World Cup, we’ll be getting a winter addition as Doha, Qatar plays host to the first ever held in November-December. With games getting started the third week of November, we are just outside of three months away and the odds markets are starting to take shape and solidify themselves.

Today, let’s take a closer look at the host nation’s group, Group A, and see where the value remains as the most watched sporting event in the world quickly approaches.

The Favorite: Netherlands

Following a round of 16 appearances at Euro 2021, the Dutch will be back in a big way this tournament and have aspirations of winning the whole thing. Missing the 2018 World Cup after back-to-back top three appearances, the Netherlands has a lot to prove and has the roster to do it.

Led by stars Memphis Depay and Virgil van Dijk, this team has the makings of one that anything less than a deep run will be a major disappointment.

The Longshot: Qatar

As winners of the 2019 Asia Cup, Qatar has more talent than many would expect led by Boualem Khoukhi and Hassan Al-Haydos, in addition to one of the best goalkeepers in the group in Saad Al Sheeb.

With the group draw, they also avoid the top seven teams in the tournament according to FIFA rankings. Their real value, however, might come in the coaching box, as Felix Sanches has been with Qatar since 2006, rising in the ranks along with his players for this World Cup.

With the pressure of being the host nation firmly on their shoulders, it will be interesting to see how this veteran team responds.

The Hopeless: Ecuador

Qualifying for the World Cup following a fourth-place finish in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, Ecuador lacks the international professional experience that the rest of this group possesses. Led by Michael Estra of DC United this time around, Ecuador has only advanced out of the group stages one time in their country's history, and I don’t expect this year to be their second.

Best Value: Senegal

Winners of the Africa Cup of Nations in February, Senegal might be Africa’s best chance in this World Cup to be the continent’s first-ever team to reach the finals. Later that month, they beat Egypt via penalties to advance to this World Cup.

Led by Chelsea goalie Eduardo Mendy, Senegal has some other studs in Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and PSG’s Idriss Gueye.

While they likely won't have the talent to make a deep run, I could certainly see them making some noise in this group, and even squeezing an advancement out of the group stages.
