The most watched sporting event in the world is back in less than 90 days as the 2022 World Cup live from Qatar will take place through November-December. The first ever winter World Cup, this year’s action is set to be some of the best in recent memory as there is no clear favorite at the top with plenty of teams that can do some damage.

Let’s take a closer look at one of the more intriguing groups of the tournament, one that includes soccer legend Lionel Messi in what will be almost certainly his final World Cup appearance.

The Favorite: Argentina

One of the most accomplished and notable footballers of all-time Lionel Messi will be making his final appearance on the World Cup stage at the age of 35 this year, looking to give Argentina its third World Cup title. It’s not just Messi with the world-class talent, however, as fellow PSG star Angel Di Maria will be complemented by Villeral’s Giovani Lo Celso for what should be a lethal Argentina attack.

Coming off of a 2021 Copa America championship, this Argentina is in top form and will be a team to watch as they almost surely advance out of this group as the winner.

The Longshot: Mexico

Making their seventh straight World Cup appearance, Mexico brings one of the most experienced rosters in the tournament and certainly in this group. They also bring in one of the most experienced managers in the tournament, as Gerardo Martino has coached both Argentina and Barcelona, giving Mexico a leg-up in this group specifically.

English Premier League’s (Wolves) Raul Jiminez will be this team’s most notable star, as he’ll need to play well for them to do much damage outside of their group.

The Hopeless: Saudi Arabia

Having never advanced outside of the group stage, Saudi Arabia figures to suffer the same result this season as they’ve been placed in one of the more difficult groups. They did finish qualifying 7-1-2, finishing ahead of Australia in the AFC regional, and are led by a coach in Herve Renard who has experience coaching at the highest levels of international football.

With no players to speak of who play on professional teams outside of Saudi Arabia, expect a similar result to the 2018 World Cup where they scored just two goals before exiting.

Best Value: Poland

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski will once again be the star player on a Poland team who has plenty of players on its roster who compete at the highest levels in Europe. Having finished third twice in World Cups, Poland’s expectations are once again sky high and I could easily see them advancing out of this group.
