The Favorite: Brazil
You have to go all the way back to 2002 to find the last time a non-European team won the World Cup, and that team was Brazil. The #1 team in the FIFA world rankings is no surprise the odds on favorite to take home the title this year, and if recent play is any indication, they should at least be in the final game.
Storming through qualifying with a record of 14-0-3, Brazil’s only loss in 2021 came against Argentina, as they only allowed five goals the entire year. As we’ve seen in years past, their success will likely rely firmly on the shoulders of superstars Neymar and Marquinhos, both of whom now play for France’s PSG.
The Longshot: Serbia
Despite being a no-show at Euro 2020, Serbia finished atop Group A in UEFA qualifying, going 6-0-2 in a group that also included Portugal. Dusan Tadic of Ajax leads the way for this team that also has elite-level talent in Aleksandr Mitrovic and Luka Jovic, and if healthy, can cause a lot of noise out of this group.
Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade product Dragan Stojkovic is now this club’s manager and has lost just twice since taking over the team last March.

The Hopeless: Cameroon
Seemingly always in the World Cup, Cameroon will be making their 12th appearance following a win over Algeria in March that served as a play-in game. At the top, much of their success will rely on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (Bayern Munich), who is amongst the only players on this team with experience playing at the sport’s highest levels.
Best Value: Switzerland
Going 5-0-3 in UEFA qualifying to win Group C, Switzerland comes into this tournament on fire as they beat Bulgaria 4-0 to close things out and secure their spot. It’s also worth noting that they conceded just two goals over that span, an impressive feat given the high-level competition they had to deal with.
The success of Switzerland and this group and beyond will land squarely on the shoulders of Granit Xhaka (Arsenal) and Xherdan Shaqiri (Chicago Fire, formerly Liverpool), who are amongst the only players with high-level professional success.
