The Favorite: Portugal
Few athletes in the world are as well known as Portugal's superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who, at 37 years old, will likely play in his final World Cup. Although it seems like the Portuguese are always in the mix, they haven't won anything since Euro 2016, and this may be their last serious chance this decade.
If Ronaldo wants to have a chance at a deep run, he'll need the help of teammate Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United and Bernardo Silva from Manchester City. It is worth noting, however, that Portugal has recently been supported by their defense despite having a long history of scoring goals.
Their defense might be the best in the group after giving up only six goals in their last ten games and one since the beginning of 2022.
The Longshot: Ghana
Ghana, which missed the 2018 World Cup, returns to the competition in 2022 after beating Nigeria in a tiebreaker based on away goals. The Black Stars' incredible 2010 run to the semifinals, when they fell to Uruguay on penalties, will live in the memory of soccer fans forever as they look to recreate that magic in Qatar.
However, compared to previous Ghana World Cup lineups, this year's team is significantly less talented and will have to rely primarily on Thomas Partey of Arsenal to deliver spectacular performances.

The Hopeless: South Korea
After defeating Germany in one of the biggest upsets in recent World Cup history in 2018, South Korea will want to shock everyone once again during group play this go around. South Korea, led by Tottenham's Son Heung-min, enters this competition having won seven of eight games in qualifying while giving up just one goal since the beginning of 2022.
South Korea is one of the more seasoned teams in this competition and always poses a danger to create mayhem, having now participated in every World Cup since 1982. This year has the potential to be no different if Heung-min can receive assistance from Wolve's leading man Hwang Hee-chan.

Uruguay, who advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals last year before falling to eventual victor France, comes into this competition with many of the same talents at the reins. Two of the very best strikers in this tournament, Luis Suarez of Atletico Madrid and Edinson Cavani of Manchester United, must demonstrate their superiority early and consistently.
The two-time World Cup champions are in for a rude awakening come November if their previous performance in the 2021 Copa America, where they suffered a quarterfinal loss in both, is any indicator.
