There’s been speculation for months that Timo Werner would join Liverpool in the upcoming off-season. Fellow German, Jurgen Klopp has always spoken very highly of his compatriot, and on paper Werner’s style of play appeared to be a perfect fit for the Reds. However, in the last twenty-fours, Chelsea have come from nowhere, and now look destined to secure the signature of Germany’s hottest property.
UK bookmakers have Timo Werner at -2500 to join Chelsea, there odds indicate a 96% chance the deal will be completed. To give you an indication of just how close Liverpool were to landing the striker, the bookmakers had them at -200 at the end of April, those odds implied the deal had a 66% chance of happening.
Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has a history of giving English youngsters plenty of playing time, and with both Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi already in the squad, not many would have predicted a move for Werner. An approach to sign the German was that unlikely, just ten days ago the bookmakers had Werner at +1100 to join Chelsea which implies just an 8% chance of happening.
Chelsea were in the running to sign Jadon Sancho this summer, but the move for Werner appears to have ended that chase, and has left Manchester United at -167 to sign the Dortmund star.
