Liverpool's draw against Everton on Saturday left them dropping more points in their hunt to retain the Premier League trophy. Those lost 2 points are unimportant though, when compared with the loss of their talisman Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk was hacked down by Everton's keeper Jordan Pickford, in a tackle which drew outrage across social media, and which has damaged Liverpool's title hopes according to the bookmakers.
Liverpool were favorites to win the Premier League before this weekend's games, available at a best price of +138, which implied a 42% chance that they got their name etched on the trophy once more. Following the injury their odds have slumped to +240, just a 29.4% chance of winning the league.
Manchester City have leapfrogged them with the books, moving from +150 to +120 as of this morning. With books now believing that Man City have a 45.5% chance of reclaiming the league.
Elsewhere in the trophy hunt, Tottenham are now third favorites, their best odds of +2100 remain the same, but Chelsea, formerly third in the betting, have dropped from +1400 to +2500, with Everton moving slightly from +2100 to +2200 following their draw with Liverpool.
Bettors too don't seem to encouraged by Liverpool's injury crisis, they're the fourth most backed team to win the Premier League, taking just 5.51% of bets in the past 24 hours, behind rivals Everton, Spurs and even Aston Villa!
