Argentina World Cup Breakdown

They have been amazing throughout the past 18 months and are currently rated third in the FIFA World Rankings. Argentina currently has a 35-game unbeaten streak, which is the longest ongoing unbeaten streak, and is very close to Italy's 37-game unbeaten streak in international play. The winning streak began in 2019, including the Copa America championship run in which they defeated Brazil 1-1 on penalties to snap a 28-year major competition trophy drought.

Argentina's offense, which is spearheaded by seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi, rarely struggles to create chances on offense. The Argentina team may not be the most gifted one they have ever had, but they are undoubtedly the most cohesive and have shown a willingness to defend, proving critical in these tournaments.

They had a +19 goal difference when World Cup qualifying was over, and at one time, they had kept a clean sheet in six straight games. For comparison, their goal differential throughout the World Cup Qualifier before the 2018 World Cup was merely +3.

Argentina is the overwhelming favorite to win Group C over Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Poland because of their recent play combined with their historical success in this tournament. In 2018, they undoubtedly learned their lesson about not giving it their all during the group stage. They came in second place behind Croatia that year, forcing them to play higher-seeded France in the Round of 16 when they were defeated 4-3.

The knockout stage is where anything can happen, but this team is in excellent condition and capable of competing against anyone in this tournament. This Argentina team will have a good opportunity to win their third World Cup championship if they stay in top form, and they really should not be tested to win this group outright.

Expect Messi and company to start the tone out of the gates with their early Tuesday match vs. Saudi Arabia.
