Qatar vs. Senegal Prediction
Despite a valiant effort in their opening match against Ecuador, Qatar was overwhelmed by the more talented Ecuadorian squad en route to a 2-0 win for Ecuador. Even without star talisman Sadio Mane, Senegal still has perhaps the five or six most talented players in the game if you were to draft from each nation’s respective squads.
The hosts didn’t show much life in the aforementioned match against Ecuador as Qatar had just 0.32 goals expected and failed to throw a shot on target. If it weren’t for a questionable offsides call, Ecuador could’ve easily won three (or maybe even more) to nil. If the hosts are to steal a point (or three) away from Senegal, they’ll more than likely have to make this one ugly.
Senegal has some of the most overall team pace in the entire tournament to go along with some sizzle in the midfield. They also have one of the best defenders and keepers in all of the world leading the backline, in the form of Chelsea’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy. It’ll be tough sledding for the Qatari squad to eke out some points.
Meanwhile, Senegal failed to score a goal in their 2-0 loss to group favorites Netherlands in their opening fixture this past Monday morning. However, it was just a flash of brilliance from the Dutch’s Cody Gakpo, followed by a 99th-minute sealer from Davy Klaassen that put Senegal to be after an extremely even affair up until the Gakpo opener in the 84th minute.
When it comes to the stats, Senegal outplayed the Dutch, leading in expected goals (0.89 to 0.67) in addition to total shots (15 to 10), and shots on target (4 to 3). On paper, Senegal should be able to put Qatar’s already diminishing knockout stage hopes to rest, and they’ll look ahead to advancing themselves with a win over Ecuador on the final day of the group’s matches next week.
