Australian Open: Oddsmakers Coming Around To Gauff's Chances Of Going All The Way

Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff has reached the fourth round of the Australian Womens Open, with a cathartic win over budding rival Naomi Osaka.
Despite beating Venus Williams and Sorana Cirstea to reach the third, the youngster’s odds before her match with Osaka were 40/1 (+4000), having only shortened slightly from the 66/1 (+6600) that was being offered pre-tournament.
However, having vanquished current world #4 Naomi Osaka - who eliminated her in emphatic fashion in their last meeting in New York – as a +360 outsider has seen oddsmakers change their tune somewhat.
Osaka has shot from 17th favorite to 6th favorite, and her chances have doubled from 40/1 to 20/1 (+2000). This indicates that the books now believe she has a 4.76% chance of winning the Major.
Oddschecker spokesperson Pete Watt: “Gauff has continued to deliver impressive performances since exploding onto the scene with that win over Venus at Wimbledon, but there is no substitute for experience.”
“With that said, the raw exuberance of youth cannot be ignored, and bettors are also beginning to feel like Coco could really do it.”
“From the moment that she won match point against Osaka earlier today, 65.76% of total bets placed on the market have gone in favor of the American.”
