Smith is the heavy favorite to win Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard. Oddsmakers given him -121 odds, or an implied 63.2% chance to take home the Academy Award. His biggest competition is Benedict Cumberbatch who is given +500 odds for his portrayal of Phil Burbank in The Power of the Dog.

Bettors don’t agree though. They’re backing tick tick Boom!!! star Andrew Garfield. Over the last 30 days, 31.6% of bets have been placed on Garfield. Smith is just behind at 30.6% of bets. Cumberbatch is in third with 22.5% of bets.

Smith has been nominated for Best Actor twice already in his career. In 2002 he lost out to Denzel Washington and in 2007 he lost to Forest Whitaker. Is 2022 finally the year that he can take home the most prized individual award in the industry? Oddsmakers believe so, but bettors aren’t so sure. So, only time will tell.
