Simone Biles Withdraws From Olympics Team Final With Medical Issue

Simone Biles, perhaps the greatest gymnast to ever walk to earth, has withdrawn from Tuesday’s Olympic gymnastics team finals in a surprise move. It is being reported that Biles has withdrawn due to “medical issues”.

Biles is 24-years old. While that is quite young for the rest of the sports world, she’s considered to be a veteran in the gymnastics world. Simone Biles won five medals in 2016 at the Rio De Janeiro Olympic games. She won gold in the vault, floor, team and all-around competitions and took bronze in the balance beam.

Simone Biles and Team USA entered the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as overwhelming favorites to win their third straight team gold. Prior to the games, Biles and the rest of the US team sat at -400 to take home gold again. At -400, oddsmakers were implying a whopping 80% chance Biles could lead Team USA to another gold.

There are no live odds for the women's gymnastics team final at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but Team USA is likely no longer the favorite to win the event without Simone Biles, the best gymnast in the world.

Biles seemed to be fine coming into Tuesday’s team competition, but we can’t be sure that she wasn’t dealing with injuries coming into the event.

Each team begins the team finals on a different event. Team USA started finals on the vault. Simone Biles participated in the event but just once. She landed her attempt, walked over to the team doctor and then exited the gym. Simone Biles returned later to support her team.

It remains to be seen whether Simone Biles will compete in the all-around or individual disciple finals as the 2021 Olympics move forward. The all-around finals are scheduled to take place on Thursday. July 29 at 6:50 am ET. The four individual events are scheduled to take place later in the week and into next week.
