2022 Tour de France Odds & Picks: Primoz Roglic Poised For Big Finish at Tour de France

With Stage 7 now in the books, all the attention on the 2022 Tour de France now turns towards the Jura, a small limestone range of mountains in between France and Switzerland. In what has been coined the ‘Dole to Lausanne’, Stage 8 is a 186.3km ride that is the perfect spring for riders to separate themselves, as it's not too far and distance and while not straight, has gentle enough climbs for riders to really push.

It should also help with near-perfect weather in the forecast, as riders won’t have any issue navigating Saturday’s section of track. In Stage 8, the start is always where you see the most action, as the top racers separate themselves out of the gate and are in a full sprint until the first sign of hills at the 2nd km.

This also marks the section of the Tour de France where the Alps will be just coming into eyesight, as riders end on a mostly flat surface that sets up for next week’s scenic rides through the Swiss mountains.

As we approach the halfway point of the 2022 Tour de France with just 13 stages remaining beyond Saturday, let’s take a closer look at one racer I’m betting on to finish near the top of the heap come to the end of this year’s race.

Podium Finish: Primoz Roglic +200

As Stage 7 finished up late on Friday, Roglic found himself in third place and just 12 seconds off the pace of current leader Tadej Pogacar, keeping pace with the odds on (heavy) favorite in every stage thus far. Having found the podium 131 times thus far in his career, the 32-year-old Roglic held the #1 position in the world rankings for over a year a few years ago and is one of the most experienced riders in this entire field.

He’s also off to a great start to 2022, winning two big races (Criterium du Daphinez and Nice) in the build-up to the Tour de France, and has so far so every indication he’s capable of winning this one.

Finishing runner-up in the 2020 Tour de France, Roglic won three stages that year, also winning three stages of the 2017 and 2018 editions of the races. It’s also worth noting that Roglic was in a position to podium last year before crashing out, replaced on the podium instead by Jumbo Visma; implying a near-certain podium for Roglic had he stayed upright.

Winner of the gold medal in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, as well as the National Road Race Championships that same year, Roglic has big race experience, amongst the most in the entire field of this year’s Tour de France.

All it should take is one stage win for these odds to shrink mightily, so I’m jumping in here at +200 while they last.
