2022 Tour de France Stage 19 Preview & Overall Odds & Picks

Only three stages remain in the 2022 Tour de France as things will wrap up in Paris come Monday afternoon. The immediate concern for riders will be Stage 19 which travels from Castelnau-Magnoac to Cahors, featuring some of the most uphill terrains outside of the mountains they just completed.

A time trial also lies ahead, as all of the top racers will prepare mentally for the final sprints of the race. Most will just be competing for a podium spot, however, as leader Jonas Vingegaard only built his lead in the Alps, as the Danish racer now sits +3.26 minutes ahead of his next closest competitor. Having ballooned to -6000 odds, oddsmakers are in agreement it’s now his race to lose.

But what’s to come in this third from the final stage? Following the Alps, the field will enter this stage exhausted and the relative flatness of the trek from Castelnau-Magnoac to Cahors will be a welcomed sight. In fact, the first 60km of the 188.3km stage will be entirely downhill, so the fastest riders can engage in a full-on sprint in an attempt to make up ground.

For any riders in hope of a breakaway, the time is now or never right out of the gates of stage 19. The latter half of the ride does feature some climbs starting with the Category 4 Côte de la cité médiévale de Lauzerte but will be nothing compared to the mountainous regions they just traversed.

While the 2022 Tour de France winner is all but decided, let’s take a closer look at who might use this stage to advance into podium (top three) contention.

Podium Finish: Stage 19 Winner - Jasper Philipsen +280

While he likely won’t even crack the top 10, there’s one rider I’m keyed in on to find success here in Stage 19; Belgian rider Jasper Philipsen. One of the best hybrid sprinters, which just means guys who can climb with speed, is the 24-year-old Alpecin-Fenix racer who is one of the best young talents in the race.

Already having picked up a stage win earlier in the Tour de France this year, Philipsen won three races outright in 2021 and I think gets it done here on a day much of the field will take lightly.
