This one feels really good. St. Louis won the division last year with a 93-win season. Milwaukee then came behind, falling seven games short with an 86-win season. The Brewers saw a steep decline in their pitching statistics and are candidates to disappoint again this season. Milwaukee traded for William Contreras and a shell of Jesse Winker, but outside of that, made very minor moves to move the needle for them.
Although St. Louis didn’t make many moves, they didn’t lose much either, and they gained an elite replacement for Molina in Wilson Contreras. St. Louis now has a 1-5 in Edman, Contreras, Goldy, Arenado, and O’Neill, who are all great bats in a lineup that is no stranger to putting up runs. Additionally, they will have a full season of Jordan Montgomery, who is coming into his own sporting a 3.11 ERA last year in his 11 games in St Louis.
Additionally, we could see a fully healthy season from Jack Flaherty, who has games where he looks unhittable. The Cardinals had the 11th-ranked bullpen last year in terms of ERA and should remain at least league average. The Cubs are a dark horse in this division and made some sneaky moves, but they were still a 74-win team last year. I don't see Chicago making a 20 game leap in just one offseason. Cardinals are the safe bet and the favorite for a reason, so we’re riding with the chalk.
