Many may not be aware but Gallen is in close pursuit of major league history.
The soon-to-be 25-year-old first arrived on the scene about midway through last season — then with the Miami Marlins — and proceeded to mostly marvel during his 15 starts. Even after he was inexplicably traded to the Diamondbacks, Gallen apparently was not phased, ultimately holding his opponent to three runs or fewer each time out.
This rookie performance was so significant that it has Gallen only three more consecutive such outings away from tying the record — held by Steve Rogers (18) — of most starts allowing no more than three runs to begin one’s career.
Such consistency is adored toward under bets, so we’ll try to ride Gallen for one more similar showing. If he can simply notch another one or close to it, that puts us in a nice position to claim this bet.
The other starter, meanwhile, Richards, has the potential to keep any foe from plating much activity on the scoreboard.
The former Los Angeles Angel returned from Tommy John a season ago, taking a handful of assignments, and while he wasn’t particularly good (until the last one, coincidentally against Arizona), it was still an important step in setting up Richards for a successful return in 2020.
I actually labeled the right-hander as one of my top three sleepers entering the campaign and he was certainly exhibiting flirtations of a breakout in the original spring training. Richards continued his solid work into summer camp and I believe he will convert on that to get back where he once was. A healthy Richards in rhythm is undoubtedly an upper echelon pitcher. Plus, he’s got an elite bullpen behind him.
