Miami Marlins vs. New York Mets Predictions
Finding pitchers in certain elements can consistently prove to be quite fruitful, especially when they’re of elite status. Enter deGrom and his mastery of daytime.
Did you know the two-time reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has the lowest afternoon ERA (1.81!) in major league history? Believe it or not, this is true. In 54 career assignments during the day spanning 343 innings, deGrom’s also assembled 10.44 K/9 while holding opponents to a .204/.260/.281 slash line.
deGrom working with the sun out has been as automatic as anything in recent memory. Thus, against a not-so-intimidating Marlins lineup, we can count on him to continue his nice start and provide that usual daytime excellence.
Taking the ball opposite deGrom is the emerging right-hander Lopez. If his first start was any indication, the 24-year-old’s rise will be quicker as the season rolls on.
Lopez was terrific in his season debut in Baltimore (and the club’s first game back after a week-long layoff) on Tuesday, spinning five shutout innings that saw the right-hander scatter only a pair of baserunners. He also recorded seven K’s.
Prior to the All-Star break last year, Lopez showed such potential of becoming a solid fixture on Miami’s pitching staff. He was only 5-5 in 14 starts but also flashed a promising 4.23 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and even held opponents to a minimal .213 average.
I like Lopez to at least keep it going in the right direction, which would indicate that he performs at least decently today. Two of his three career dates with the Mets clocked in as quality starts, and if he can just duplicate that again here, this under will be in a very desirable position to win.
