Picks and predictions for Sunday Night Baseball between the Phillies and Mets

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies MLB Picks, Predictions & Odds for Sunday Night Baseball

We’re closing out the weekend with some MLB picks coming our way from Philadelphia. There is no love lost in this series, which means it usually produces tense moments and tight games when the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets meet. On Sunday, the final game of the series is also the focus of Sunday Night Baseball, which means even more eyes will be focused in on this one. The series is split 1-1, so who will come away the winner? Let’s take a look at our MLB picks for New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies.

Sunday’s MLB Picks: New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies - 5/2/2021

It’s not exactly a marquee pitching matchup in Philadelphia on Sunday night. It’s been a tough start to the year for Mets starting pitcher David Peterson. The 25-year old has a 5.59 ERA and a 1-3 record in four starts.

His K/9 are up and BB/9 are down this season compared to last, but he’s giving up far too many home runs. Last season, in 49.2 IP, his home run to fly ball ratio was 10.2%. This season it’s an insane 36.4%. Far more batters are barrelling the ball and it’s led to a really disappointing start to the season for Peterson.

His opponent, Zach Eflin, has been really solid to start the 2021 MLB season. In five starts, he’s 1-1 with a 3.58 ERA, an improvement over last season’s 3.97 ERA. He’s keeping the ball in the ballpark with just an 8.6% home run to fly ball ratio and a 25.3% hard hit percentage. While his Ks are down, he’s got an absolutely insane 0.55 BB/9 this season. He’s pounding the strike zone and not making mistakes over the plate. Something that is always a recipe for success.

As for the offensive units of each of these teams, they both leave some things to be desired, but the Mets have been especially bad so far this year.

The Mets have scored just 63 runs, good for dead last in the MLB and a whopping 16 behind the second-to-last team, the Detroit Tigers. They’re last in the majors in home runs, RBI, total bases and hits.

Brandon Nimmo has been the lone bright spots on the team, hitting .318 on the season. But offseason acquisition Francisco Lindor is batting .182 in his first 21 games as a Met. Meanwhile, Jeff McNeil is also below the Mendoza line at .186.

The Phillies are far from world beaters right now. They have struggles of their own and just lost to this Mets team last night.

But, Eflin has shown that he can be a solid No. 3 starter while Peterson has struggled at almost every turn. Add that to the fact that the Mets offense is historically bad and I don’t know how I could take the Mets tonight.

So, I’m going with the Phillies to win and have the most hits on Sunday Night Baseball, because that is somehow +125.  I do have another prop that I’m going to sprinkle as long as he’s In the lineup, but the odds haven’t been released yet. Michael Conforto is a career .269 hitter off Eflin and has three home runs against the Phillies pitcher. So, let’s take him at big odds to hit a homer tonight.
