Cardinals vs. Padres

Sunday Night Baseball this week is a matchup between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres in San Diego. Both teams have been playing great baseball this season, but San Diego has won the first two games of the series and is coming off a 13-3 blowout on Saturday. Let’s take a look at Cardinals vs. Padres predictions.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals are marching Kwang Hyun Kim out to the mound Sunday night. Kim has been awesome this season. In five starts, he has a 2.74 ERA and has struck out 24 batters while walking just five. Jack Flaherty and John Gant have been the Cardinals two best starters, but Kim is right there with them this season.

If there is a place to pinpoint where the Cardinals have struggled this year it’s at the dish. The power numbers are there, they’re tied for fifth in the majors with 52 home runs. But, they’re hitting just .231 as a team, and their .306 OBP is 20th in the league.

San Diego Padres

The Padres began the year as one of the most popular picks to win the 2022 World Series, and for good reason. They have the pitching and the hitting to get it done, the biggest question was could they get past the Dodgers in the NL West.

40 games into the season and it’s the San Francisco Giants atop the division but both the Dodgers and Padres are gaining on them fast and should overtake them shortly.

Sunday’s starter for San Diego, Jack Weathers, has seen time in the rotation and in the bullpen. Sunday will be his fourth start of the 2021 season, but he’s been almost unhittable no matter when he takes the mound. The southpaw has a miniscule 0.81 ERA and 0.72 WHIP coming into Sunday Night Baseball.

Cardinals vs. Padres Prediction

Sunday night’s Cardinals vs. Padres prediction is a tricky one. Both starting pitchers are in the middle of awesome seasons and both teams are having great years. However, I love what Weathers has been doing this year and think he could be the difference maker. If I knew he was going to throw six innings on Sunday, I’d take the Padres -1.5 at a big price. But, he could realistically just see three or four innings and have the bullpen close the rest out. So, I’m just taking the Padres straight up.
