Mets vs. Braves

Monday kicks off a Mets vs. Braves series that has tons of meaning atop the NL East. The Mets currently sit in first in the division by a half game over the Phillies. Meanwhile, the Braves are two back. It’s been an odd season in the NL East so far with almost every team in the entire division hovering around .500. Let’s take a look at to tonight’s matchup and get some Mets vs. Braves predictions.

New York Mets

The Mets are in first place, which should be reason to celebrate, but it hasn’t exactly been all roses in Queens this season. The Mets have far and away the worst offense in baseball. In 34 games, they’ve scored just 119 runs. That’s 19 fewer than the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team for which I would guess your average sports fan couldn’t even name a single player.

Francisco Lindor, the Mets’ prized offseason signing, has been one of the worst everyday players in Major League Baseball. The good news is, that won’t continue. Lindor has been an All-Star for many years and is still in the prime of his career. He’s just slumping.

However, one of the Mets’ other postseason additions, Taijuan Walker, has been absolutely fantastic and gets the start tonight. Walker is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. In seven starts, he’s given up more than two runs just once.

So, while they can’t hit right now, New York is trotting out one of the hottest pitchers in the league to face the Braves on Monday.

Atlanta Braves

It’s early, but the Atlanta Braves have been one of the biggest disappointments of the season so far. The talent in the Atlanta lineup is silly. Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, reigning MVP Freddie Freeman, former No. 1 pick Dansby Swanson, Austin Riley, Marcell Ozuna, Cristian Pache and the list goes on. Scoring runs hasn’t been the issue for Atlanta, it’s been keeping the other team from crossing the plate.

Last season, Atlanta rode an embarrassment of riches in young starting pitching to the NLCS. This year, it’s been a tough start for one of those arms in Max Fried. Fried was crucial to last year’s run, going 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. This year, his ERA is 6.55 after five starts and that WHIP is up at 1.73.

Now, Ronald Acuna Jr. is out with a lower leg injury and a slow start to the season has the chance to snowball into something more serious if they don’t stop it.

Mets vs. Braves Prediction

If I had to make a play on the outcome, I’d back the Mets. I trust Walker more than Fried right now and with Acuna hurt and likely not playing, I think the Mets can score enough runs to just get the win. But, I’m not picking either team in the moneyline market. I don’t trust the Mets offense enough to bet money they’ll score runs. Instead, I’m betting on the total and hammering the under 8 runs. Walker is a legit top-tier pitcher right now, the Mets can’t score and Max Fried is better than his numbers this season.
