MLB Picks

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals

Over/Under: 9

First pitch: 2:10 p.m. ET

Probable pitchers: Casey Mize (3-3, 3.69 ERA) vs. Kris Bubic (0-0, 0.96 ERA)

Tigers vs. Royals Prediction

Um, what? Only select few games at Kauffman Stadium get tagged with a total of 9, yet the linesmakers have opted to hang one up for this intriguing showdown.

Mize, of course, is one of the most prized youngsters in all of baseball and now just appears to be hitting his stride. After a sour first taste of the bigs last year, the 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick is showing why he’s so highly regarded. Mize has registered a quality start in each of his last four outings, which is very significant considering he had a grand total of one in his prior 11 career starting assignments.

This is the upper-rotation pitcher — and potentially ace — we’ll be seeing for many years, making it wise to latch onto the 24-year-old amidst his obvious ascension.

Then there’s Bubic, a big Zylbert Guy, fresh off his first start (and fifth appearance) this season. And no, that 0.96 ERA next to his name is not a typo.

Bubic, as I suspected last year in his rookie campaign, is legit. It was baffling when he began this season at the club’s alternate site but he’s quickly solidified his standing as a cornerstone for the rotation.

The Kansas City left-hander completely stifled a contending Milwaukee Brewers batting order and figures to enjoy today’s matchup even more. The Tigers are dead-last in baseball against southpaws in team OPS (.572) — and by a wide margin — while their .211 average in that department sits as third-worst in baseball.

Just like his counterpart, Bubic is on the rise and grabbing both with that lofty over/under of 9 is my plan on this Sunday.
