Diamondbacks vs. Athletics Predictions
The Diamondbacks are 20-41 on the year and will now travel to Oakland to take on the Athletics, who are 35-26 on the year.
Jon Duplantier is slated to get his third start of the season. The first two have not been good. Duplantier is a right-handed thrower who hasn’t pitched through the first five innings in either start this year.
He’s allowed 11 heights, nine runs, four home runs, five walks and eight strikeouts in 8.2 innings. That all condenses into an ERA of nearly 10 through his first two starts.
The Oakland Athletics lineup has had plenty of success against righties, especially as of late.
Since May 8, the Athletics have 44 doubles and 25 home runs against righties along with 88 runs and 83 RBI’s. Lately, the Athletics have done well with situational hitting and have nine sacrifice flies within the last 30 days.
In his first two starts, Duplaintier is striking out just 18.2 percent of batters and walking 11.4 percent of batters. He’s inducing 40 percent of ground balls and giving up 36.7 percent of hard contact.
The projected Athletics lineup has some serious pop against righties with an isolated power of .183 as a team and a .338 weighted on-base average against righties in the last 30 days.
They’ve struck out just 19.7 percent of the time as a lineup against righties and also walk 10.4 percent of the time. Anytime a team walks 10 percent of the time or more, it’s a good sign. It means they get guys on base and have chances to score.
Ramon Laureano won’t be in the lineup due to an injury and his bat would be nice but Mark Canha, Tony Kemp, Matt Olson, Seth Brown and Sean Murphy have all shown off power recently against righties and should have success against Duplaintier and the Diamondbacks subpar bullpen.
Only Brown, Murphy and Chapman are striking out above 22 percent of the time against righties and while Chapman has really struggled recently, facing a pitcher like Duplantier could help him snap out of his slump. Knowing you’re facing a guy that can’t strike out many batters always gives the hitter some confidence at the plate.
With that said, I’m going to be taking the Athletics to score over their team total of 4.5 runs. They might not get to hit in the ninth inning, giving them only eight innings to score five runs. However, Duplaintier has already allowed nine runs in 8.2 innings and the bullpen for the Diamondbacks has also struggled to strike batters out. They’ve given up some solid power to both sides of the plate.
We’ll likely need one or two runs against the bullpen from the 5th inning and on. The A’s offense is more than capable of putting up some runs in this one.
Pick: Athletics Over 4.5 Team Total @ -115
