Probable pitchers: Chris Bassitt (7-2, 3.40 ERA) vs. Kolby Allard (2-2, 2.93 ERA)

If last year featured an All-Star Game, Bassitt absolutely would have earned his first trip to the Midsummer Classic. Finishing 5-2 with a cool 2.29 ERA, he paced a starting rotation that majorly contributed to a good first-place ballclub.

Bassitt may just miss the cut this season but that shouldn’t take away from his latest solid campaign. He enters this assignment at 7-2 while owning a 3.40 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, the latter of which ranks him sixth in the American League among starting pitchers. Furthermore, it’s the lowest WHIP of his eight-year career.

The Oakland right-hander is also registering his lowest batting average against to date, holding opposing hitters to a .218 mark that places in the top 10.

Perhaps most glaring, Bassitt’s strikeout rate (9.52 K/9) has never been higher, as he never even averaged a K per inning previously. He’s notably doing this while issuing his fewest free passes (2.23 BB/9).

With an extra sense of perhaps seeing his first career All-Star berth in sight as a boost, combined with his usual steadiness, I like Bassitt to churn out another gem. And with it being a getaway-day game following a nighttime affair, he’ll likely be seeing a Rangers batting order at less than usual strength.

Allard, meanwhile, doesn’t really have nearly the emerging reputation as his counterpart in this one. However, he’s definitely someone still much on the rise.

For those surprised by Allard’s current desirable numbers — don’t be. The former first-round draft choice is simply finally settling into life as a big-league starter after much potential as an Atlanta Brave.

Since being inserted into the rotation, Allard is keeping the offense to a minimum, having not yielded more than two earned runs in any starter. During his most recent turn, Allard strung together his first quality start of the campaign and seemingly couldn’t be in more of a groove.

The A’s can be a tough bunch to tangle with but Allard’s prowess in Texas’ new park leads me to believe he can chip in another effective outing regardless. In his career at Globe Life Field, the 23-year-old southpaw owns a very respectable 3.60 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 35 innings to go with 9.77 K/9. Contrast that to the 6.52 ERA and 1.55 WHIP he’s posted on the road and we thus appear to have Allard in his most preferred environment to pitch.

Dealing with a total of 8, a fine showing from Allard that covers more than half the contest figures to be enough. Combine that with the consistency of Bassitt and the endgame appears to be a low score.

Oakland Athletics vs. Texas Rangers Prediction: UNDER 8 (-102)
