San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction
First pitch: 10:10 p.m. ET
Probable pitchers: Anthony DeSclafani (8-2, 2.77 ERA) vs. Trevor Bauer (7-5, 2.57 ERA)
Games at Dodger Stadium very uncommonly draw an over/under of 8 or higher, yet a premium pitching matchup commencing this huge Giants-Dodgers series has garnered that exact total. The linesmakers are living dangerously here.
No doubt, the call to make hanging up such a high number has something to do with DeSclafani getting absolutely torched by the Dodgers about a month ago, when he was on the hook for 10 runs allowed.
To put into perspective what an anomaly that was, though, DeSclafani’s only yielded only five more runs than that in his other 14 assignments combined. And despite this, he rebounded his very next time against this same opponent by limiting them to two runs in 4.2 innings.
Those were also the only two turns for DeSclafani in which he didn’t clock out with five frames under his belt, but that likely won’t happen again this evening given his overall consistency this year.
Besides, the right-hander referred to as “Disco” looks to be back in a real nice groove, as evident from his last four outings since those back-to-back dates opposite LA. In fact, only four runs total were scored off DeSclafani in those starts, and he’s also amassed a desirable 26-4 K/BB ratio in this span. We can trust him.
Meanwhile, his counterpart in this one — the reigning National League Cy Young — can seemingly always be trusted. Bauer’s hunger simply never wanes and it especially won’t in his second foray into arguably baseball’s best division rivalry.
The first time he saw the Giants toward the end of May (in a victorious under we had), Bauer was nothing short of dominant, stringing together six excellent innings of two-hit baseball. In the process, the Giants managed just an unearned run, while Bauer struck out a season-high 11.
That also involved the standout moment of Bauer emphatically holstering away his sword. He’s continued marching along in such impressive fashion and it’s hard to imagine the veteran coming apart tonight.
Again, a very suspect total that just shouldn’t be this high from one of the pitcher-friendlier parks around the country. Both starters carry the potential for a dominant seven frames, and so long as the other doesn’t get bombed, the end result points to a roomy low final score.
