Giants vs. Diamondbacks Probable Pitchers
- Giants: Alex Wood (9-3, 3.83 ERA, 105 K's)
- Diamondbacks: Merrill Kelly (7-8, 4.38 ERA, 111 K's)
This is the final game of this four-game series between the Giants and Diamondbacks. San Francisco has taken two-of-three games so far and is looking to lock in the series win with Alex Wood on the mound tonight. Meanwhile, the lowly Diamondbacks are trying to just get out of this matchup at .500 for the series.
These are two teams experiencing immensely different seasons as the Giants are in first in the NL West and seen as one of the most surprising stories of the MLB this year. As for Arizona, at 34-75, they’re just trying to string together some wins and build some momentum.
Let’s start with Alex Wood. Wood is in the midst of a solid season with a 9-3 record and a 3.83 ERA. His 1.19 WHIP is a little high, but San Francisco’s offense has helped him out when he’s on the mound.
The Giants just lost one of Wood’s starts in the month of July, a 8-6 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, but Wood left that game with the lead and went 3-0 in the month.
Wood has started twice against the Diamondbacks this season and won both starts. In 11 innings pitched against the Diamondbacks, he’s allowed four earned runs and struck out 15 while walking four. All this is to say I expect another solid showing from him tonight.
While Merrill Kelly certainly hasn’t been lighting the world on fire, he’s been decent this season for the Dbacks. But, he’s gotten absolutely lit up by this lineup in his career.
Against the San Francisco Giants’ projected lineup for today’s game, Merrill Kelly has pitched 93 official at-bats. The Giants hitters are hitting .333 against Kelly with four home runs, 13 extra base hits and a .588 slugging %.
Earlier this year against the Giants, Kelly gave up four earned runs in three innings of work. Now, he had a really good start against them last month, going seven innings and allowing just three earned runs, but all three of those runs came before the fifth inning.
This Giants lineup, after adding Kris Bryant at the deadline, is poised to be one of the best in the league. They hit from both sides of the plate and have great numbers against Kelly.
Rather than relying on an onslaught all night. I’m going to ride with the Giants team total over in the first five innings, which sits at 2.5 runs with -105 odds.
I think this lineup jumps on Kelly early and puts up at least three runs in the first five innings with the potential that they blow it open early.
