Los Angeles Angels vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction & Pick
Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers
First pitch: 1:10 p.m. ET
Probable pitchers: Jose Quintana (0-3, 6.12 ERA) vs. Matt Manning (3-5, 6.10 ERA)
Correct, those ERAs don’t look too pretty.
It can be an interesting — and profitable — spot, however, when one of the two probables, especially a veteran that’s been around for awhile, is making his return to a Major League starting rotation.
Such will be the scenario with Quintana today, and despite the 7.22 ERA he posted in his nine starts as an Angel, there’s reason to believe the lefty can re-emerge.
After being jettisoned to the bullpen, Quintana has fared serviceably, manufacturing a 3.86 ERA and, most impressively, a 20-3 K/BB ratio. That includes an impressive 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 12-1 K/BB ratio since the break.
Having gained a second life as a starter now for Joe Maddon (after Patrick Sandoval got injured), Quintana has a new lease and extra appreciation for every start. He can continue along with the adjustments he’s made throughout his recent success and tamest opponent like the Tigers. Quintana does have potential.
Plenty of talk about the potential for the other starter in this affair, Manning, will rage on for years. And that’s the advantage of catching the talented youngster in a tempting buy-low situation.
First of all, there’s been a stark contrast within Manning’s home-and-road splits, as the rookie has looked far, far better pitching in Detroit (3.15 ERA) than on the road (8.16 ERA). Interestingly, he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his starts in front of the hometown fans.
Manning, whom I’m a big fan of, looks like he may have turned the corner in churning out more consistency overall. Though the K’s still aren’t there yet, I know they will come based on his past strong strikeout tendencies throughout the minor leagues.
