Los Angeles Angels vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction
The Orioles haven’t won a game in a long, long time. The streak has reached 18 games after getting swept by the Atlanta Braves.
This is a bad baseball team and because of that, they’ve been good to bettors who have bet against them within the last three weeks.
Spenser Watkins will take the mound for the Orioles with a 2-5 record and a 5.63 ERA. His ERA actually isn’t as bad as Dylan Bundy, his opposition, but he’s still the worse pitcher of the two.
Watkins has allowed four or more runs in every start in August. In his last five starts, he’s thrown 23.2 innings and has allowed 35 hits, 23 runs and four home runs. He won’t overwhelm you with strikeouts and certainly doesn’t have good stuff to get outs.
In the last 30 days, Watkins has an xFIP of 5.72 with a strikeout rate of just 10.5 percent. He’s giving up a wOBA of .391 to lefties and .392 to righties through more than 100 at-bats.
Watkins is also giving up tons of power and extra base hits, allowing a .200 ISO to lefties and .265 ISO to righties in the last 30 days. The extra base hits are coming because Watkins gets just 40.4 percent of ground balls and allows 28.7 percent line drive contact. Bundle the line drive contact with a hard iht rate of 52.1 percent and Watkins’ numbers look like a disaster.
And they are.
The Angels offense isn’t all that special. They’ve struggled in the last 30 days without their star players like Anthony Rendon and Mike Trout. However, this offense should be just fine against Watkins.
The only consistent hitters for the Angels have been Shohei Ohtani and Max Stassi. Brandon Marsh has been getting on base a little bit while David Fletcher and Jose Iglesias limit strikeouts.
The lineup isn’t amazing but this is more of a fade of Watkins, who has allowed four or more runs in each of his last five games. If a starter can’t strike big league hitters out, there’s a good chance balls in play become hits, especially when you’re allowing a high line drive rate and hard contact rate while not being able to get strikeouts for a high amount of grounders.
I’ll take the Angels to score over 2.5 runs in the first five innings in this one. The Angels will have guys on base every inning. They’ll need a couple clutch hits to make this bet a winner. Having Ohtani in this lineup will help and other bats like Jared Walsh.
The reality is, while the Angels have struggled against righties as of late, they’re all hitting hard hit balls when connecting. They’re going to connect against Watkins in this one.
