Getting someone that’s peaking in a relatively high over/under is always optimal. That’s the case here for Montas.
Just look at what the Oakland right-hander has been doing. Montas strung together eight quality starts in his last nine tries, even notching three 10-strikeout games during this span — he had four such efforts in his career prior.
Well, that’s a solid indicator to me that Montas is in top form right now, the form that has earned him Pitcher of the Month honors before. Being a longtime fan of the burley Dominican native, I know he’s capable of much more when going strong.
At the very least, his current run points to another quality showing, and if you know that advance, you’re already in good shape for an under. How about Manning?
The 2016 No. 9 overall draft pick is another starter — like Montas — that I’m a fan of from the beginning, and it’s pleasing to see he’s coming off probably his best start since first debuting in June.
Manning’s last turn in the rotation saw the rookie limit the hard-hitting Toronto Blue Jays to only one run arose six sharp innings. Most notably, he finally had a respectable strikeout total, amassing five K’s — of course, that’s still not much, but it does represent a career-best mark so far after really lacking in that department.
This was very encouraging after Manning sustained very impressive high strikeout rates throughout his minor league journey.
The A’s feature a solid lineup, but it’s also one that might suffer, even if just a bit, from being west-coast residents playing a 1:10 p.m. ET contest, which translates to an early-morning bout by the Bay. We’ll take any extra advantage for a youngster like Manning opposite a playoff contender.
The key to this bet is Montas continuing to roll. Manning may also be in the process of hitting his stride, meaning as long as the likelier scenario of him not getting rocked plays out, a low score seems right.
