Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction and Pick
Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels Probable Pitchers
- Angels: Janson Junk (0-1, 2.45 ERA)
- White Sox: Dallas Keuchel (8-9, 5.33 ERA)
Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction
The Angels traded away Andrew Heaney for their starting pitcher tonight.
Janson Junk will make his second start of the season for the Angels. His first start of the year came against the Texas Rangers, where he allowed six hits, five runs, and two home runs in 3.2 innings. Junk failed to get high strikeouts with just two and walked one batter in that game.
Only one run allowed of the five was earned in that game, but he couldn’t get out of the jam once runners were on base.
Junk had a 4.93 xFIP in that one outing and struck out just 11.1 percent of batters. He induced only 40 percent ground balls and gave up 33.3 percent of line drives. The hard contact was also high at 46.7 percent.
Keep this in mind. He struggles against Texas, one of the worst offenses in baseball.
Righties had a .787 wOBA and ISO of .857 in eight plate appearances. He wasn’t able to strike out a single right-handed bat in that game.
Before Junk came to Los Angeles, he was pitching in Somerset for the Yankees AA affiliate. He then went to Los Angeles and played for Rocket City when he was traded from the Yankees to the Angels.
In Somerset, he had a 1.78 ERA in 12 starts and 14 games. So it made sense why Los Angeles would trade Heaney for him.
When he came to Rocket City, he had a 5.27 ERA in five starts while allowing 6.91 runs per nine innings. His WHIP got high, but his walks stayed low.
Junk won’t be a guy walking a ton of batters and does have strikeout potential. So far, he hasn’t shown that strikeout potential in the majors, and the White Sox should be able to do damage against him.
As a unit, the White Sox have an ISO of .205 and wOBA of .369 against right-handed pitching. Righties like Luis Robert, Jose Abreu, and Eloy Jimenez should have plenty of power opportunities in this one. All but two players in this projected White Sox lineup have hit a high amount of line drives against righties, and that shouldn’t change against Junk.
These first five numbers are a bit juiced, but it makes sense. Junk has looked awful in the majors and hasn’t been the same since he left Somerset. So let’s take the Over 3 in the first five innings for the White Sox on the team total. We’ll need four to cash, but three at least gets us the void.
We’ll see multiple home runs against Junk from the White Sox, and as long as some players are on base, we’ll cash this ticket.
