Toronto Blue Jay vs. Texas Rangers Prediction
The Blue Jays' season got off to an inauspicious start yesterday as they found themselves down 7-0 to the Texas Rangers who are the presumed bottom feeders in their division. Opening Day starter, Jose Berrios had a horrible start to his season as he was only able to get 1 out before being forced to leave the game. The Blue Jays had a lot of hype coming into the season and their pitching was the main question mark. While the Blue Jays didn't look very good on the mound, their highly touted lineup was able to pick up the slack as they scored 10 runs and came all the way back to win thanks to a huge game from Teoscar Hernandez who reached base three times and belted the game-tying homer in the 5th inning. The Blue Jays bullpen really picked up the slack and only allowed 1 run over the last 7 innings of the game to keep the Rangers at bay. All offseason, people had been talking about how good the Blue Jays were and I think some of that hype crept into their opening day performance and got in their heads a little bit through the first few innings. The lineup then woke up and erupted as most expected scoring 10 runs over the last 5 innings of the game
On the mound today for the Jays is a free-agent acquisition, Kevin Gausman, who had an excellent and resurgent season last year for the Giants. Gausman has a nasty splitter and gets a ton of swing and misses/ground balls with how effective it is. The Rogers Centre in Toronto is a fairly hitter-friendly park and the ball typically flies there. It will be key for Gausman to keep the ball down to get ground balls and avoid the long ball and his arsenal of a power splitter and plus fastball will play well in his new park. I also think the Jays lineup is going to wake up much earlier today. It took them 3 innings to score a run before the flood gates opened last night and I see them starting much faster in today's game. With that being said, I am rolling with Blue Jays F5 -0.5 at -130 for 1U as my most confident MLB play of the day.
