New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox Best Bet: Avoid the Bullpens With This Pick
Boston is 0-2 so far on the year. The Yankees have won both of their matchups but you would be surprised to find out that after five innings we have seen Boston tied with New York in both games. That’s the beauty of this bet, a tie is a win for us. Boston has a really good team and it’s hard to imagine them opening the year getting swept. I don’t trust the bullpen though and I do trust the Yankees so I factored that out of the equation. The pitching matchup isn’t great but I think we have the edge here.

Tanner Houck vs. Jordan Montgomery doesn’t necessarily scream must-see TV but this rivalry is always worth watching. These are very similar pitchers, Houck has the slight advantage in ERA by about .3 earned runs per game. Where we really get the edge is the history versus batters. Houck has 27 matchups against the Yankee batters and has only allowed 1 hit and 1 RBI in all of those at-bats. Even though batters are only hitting .037 versus Houck in that short sample size he has had 6 walks which isn’t great.
Montgomery has struggled much more against Boston bats allowing 38 hits and 11 walks in 141 at-bats. An OBP of .347 isn’t even that bad but compared to Houck's numbers, we get the edge.
This game should be closer to a pick'em game in my opinion so getting the tie for an outright win in this situation feels like a bargain. I like the pitching matchup and I like that Boston is due for a win. I’m expecting an annoyed Red Sox club to come out hot tonight and put up some early runs as they do hit left-handed pitching very well. If you’re into betting batter props I see that Xander Borgarts is 12-26 against Montgomery lifetime so I’m expecting a big game out of him. I think this first 5 is amazing value and I’m happy to not have to worry about any bullpen shenanigans.
