Phillies vs. Athletics Prediction
The Oakland Athletics are going to be extremely bad this year.
Oakland's lineup had a .130 ISO and wOBA of .252 against righties last season. That's just not going to cut it. Zach Eflin is expected to take the mound for the Phillies. Last year, the right-handed pitcher had an xFIP of 3.80 with 23.1% strikeouts and just 4.1% walks. He rarely walked anyone and didn't allow much power either.
Against Eflin, lefties had a .292 wOBA with an ISO of .155 last season while righties had a .321 wOBA with an ISO of .175. Righties will have more success against Eflin, despite Eflin being a right-handed pitcher, but it won't matter much against Oakland.
The Athletics will likely have six righties in the lineup with three lefties but overall, only Seth Brown, a left-handed slugger, has an ISO big enough to be a concern for Eflin, The rest of the team is not looking so hot on paper against Eflin.
However, on the other hand, Daulton Jefferies will get the start for the Athletics in today's game. Jefferies finished last season with a 5.12 xFIP along with 13.8% strikeouts and 6.9% walks. Granted, he only faced 58 plate appearances, however, the Phillies absolutely destroyed right-handed pitching last season.
The projected lineup for the Phillies had a .250 ISO and a .363 wOBA against righties along with 9.2% walks last season. The additions of Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos will absolutely help this Phillies lineup moving forward, especially with Bryce Harper already locked into the three spot in the lineup.
Schwarber, JT Realmuto, Harper, Castellanos, and Hoskins all destroyed right-handed pitching last season with ISO above the league average against righties. Look for the top half of the order for the Phillies to knock out Jefferies early in this game.
