San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants prediction and pick for Tuesday. MLB expert Mike Spector offers play on the total for today's Padres and Giants matchup Tuesday night.

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction: Expect a Pitching Dual

The San Diego Padres finished last season with a 79-83 record and were widely thought of as Major League Baseball’s most disappointing team relative to its preseason expectations. Conversely, the San Francisco Giants took the league by storm, winning 107 games and coming out of nowhere to win the National League West.

The Padres likely want to make a statement in this series and show the Giants that 2022 is a new year and that they will be a contender in the division this season. Yesterday’s series opener went to San Diego, as the Padres pushed two late runs across for a 4-2 victory.

San Diego now owns baseball’s longest active winning streak at four games and is also the only team in the league with four wins at this point. Will the Padres extend their winning streak to five, or will the Giants even up the series tonight?

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish was brilliant in his first start, becoming the fourth pitcher since 1901 to throw 6+ hitless innings on Opening Day and the first since Kevin Appier did it in 1995. Darvish showed an early glimpse of the pitcher he was in the first half of last season when he pitched to a 3.09 ERA through his first 18 starts. In addition, he had a span of nine starts from April 6 to May 23, when he allowed no more than two earned runs in any start.

The wheels fell off for Darvish in the second half, but that could have been due to injury or fatigue. Nevertheless, he looks strong to start this season and faces a Giants offense that has averaged three runs per game through the first four games. And unlike most other starting pitchers who are not yet fully stretched out, Darvish threw 92 pitches in his first start, which bodes well for not needing to rely on the Padres bullpen for many outs tonight.

San Francisco counters with Alex Cobb, who makes his team debut after signing a two-year contract worth $20M in the offseason. Only three current Padres hitters (Manny Machado, Luke Voit, and Eric Hosmer) have faced Cobb in their careers. While they have combined for five home runs in 50 at-bats against him, we do not expect the ball to carry in the cool crisp April air in a cavernous Oracle Park.

The under has cashed in four of San Diego’s first five games this season and is 4-1 in San Francisco’s last five home games. We are not getting as much value on the under, as the total has dropped from 8.0 to 7.5 runs. However, we are still confident in backing the under with two strong starting pitchers toeing the rubber.
