Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction
The first thing to notice about this game is the weather. Even though it's supposed to rain, it won't come until later in the game. As a result, the air will be pretty thick in Chicago, with humidity around 80%. So while the whole game over may look shot due to the weather, the first few innings could see some balls carried.
Robbie Ray posted good numbers in 2021 overall, but his first-inning ERA (3.09) was higher than his overall ERA (2.84). Ray is also a left-hander, and he will face a lineup with all right-handed batters. The top of the White Sox order is strong and features four tough outs in Tim Anderson, Luis Robert, Jose Abreu, and Yasmani Grandal. Anderson averaged .319 against left-handed pitching last year, Robert .397, Abreu .294, and Grandal .266. All four hit better against lefties.
Dallas Keuchel will face a similar situation tonight. He will face a lineup that features six right-handed hitters in the first six spots. The Mariners lineup also has familiarity with Keuchel. Abraham Toro is 2-2 against Keuchel, Ty France is 2-6, Mitch Haniger is 8-29, Torrens is 0-2, but then Eugenio Suarez is 3-9. Keuchel had a 5.28 ERA in 2021, including a 4.8 ERA in the first inning. He allowed batting averages of .325, .308, and .355 to 2,3, and 5-spot hitters. He struggles against the top of the order and averaged a run in the first inning a little over half the time last season.
Ray and Keuchel have a combined first-inning ERA of 7.89, meaning they allowed almost one run per first inning in 2021 combined. This, combined with the Mariner's success against Keuchel, and Ray's struggles against right-handed batters, makes a good argument for a run in the first inning tonight. Plus, with rain coming later in the night, the humid weather should help the ball carry a little more. Take the first inning score tonight.
