Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction: Will the Offense Wake Up Today?
The matchup between the Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox is one of just two games on Wednesday’s slate between two teams that won 90+ games a year ago. Chicago looks like a team destined to win even more than the 93 games it won last year after getting off to a 3-1 start this season, while the Mariners are 2-3 and have played all their games away from home thus far.
One of Seattle’s two wins came with ace Robbie Ray on the mound, who will look to repeat his masterful Opening Day performance. Can Ray help the Mariners even their record at .500, or will the White Sox do damage to the reigning Cy Young Award winner?

Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction
Robbie Ray was Seattle’s most prized offseason acquisition after a career year where he went 13-7 and led the American League in ERA (2.84), games started (32), innings pitched (193.1), strikeouts (248), ERA+ (157) and WHIP (1.045). Ray’s four-seam fastball was nearly unhittable in 2021, as he induced 239 swings and misses with it, the second-most of any pitch by any pitcher (behind Kevin Gausman’s 272 swings and misses with a splitter). In his Opening Day win, Ray held the Twins to just one earned run on three hits over seven innings.
Ray is opposed by Dallas Keuchel, who is making his season debut for the White Sox. Keuchel was hanging on by a thread at the back end of Chicago’s rotation after a career-high ERA of 5.28 in 32 appearances (30 starts) last season. Keuchel’s 5.3 strikeouts/nine innings were his lowest since his rookie season, and his 5.23 FIP was his highest since 2012. Keuchel also allowed 25 home runs last season (in 162 IP), five more than any other where he had more innings pitched.
The under will be a popular play with the defending Cy Young Award winner on the mound. However, while Ray recorded five strikeouts in his first start, he will need to cut down the four walks he issued, or a lineup as potent as Chicago’s will take advantage. In addition, Keuchel’s best years are behind him, and we like Seattle’s offense to explode compared to the 12 total runs it has pushed across in the first five games.
The over is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings between these teams and has cashed in five of the previous seven meetings in Chicago. Therefore, the over is our strongest play, but we also do not like Keuchel’s chances of lasting deep into the game and will also play the under on his number of outs recorded.
