MLB expert Mike Spector offers one player prop and a game prop for tonight's Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels matchup from Arlington Texas. Will Shohei Ohtani dominate the Rangers lineup?
ANALYSIS

Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction: Will Shohei Ohtani Remain Perfect Against the Rangers?

Tonight’s matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers goes from an average to below-average game in terms of excitement to must-watch television for one reason: Shohei Ohtani takes the mound. The reigning American League MVP and most electrifying two-way player (the only two-way player with the National League DH rule?) toes the rubber for the second time this season as the Angels look to extend their winning streak to a season-high three games.

Will the Angels put another “W” in the win column, or will the prospect of their first road game be too much to overcome?

Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction

In his young career, Shohei Ohtani has owned the Rangers, going a perfect 3-0 against them with a 2.86 ERA in four career starts. His ERA climbs to 4.09 in his two career starts (11 innings pitched) at Globe Life Field but was done in by one home run in that span. Otherwise, Ohtani’s resume is virtually spotless on the road against the Rangers, striking out 15 of the 43 batters faced and posting a WHIP of 0.818.

Ohtani has been a strikeout machine dating back to last season, recording seven or more strikeouts in six of his previous seven appearances. Despite this trend, oddsmakers have likely set his over/under at 6.5 strikeouts, believing he may not last long in this outing so early in the season. However, though Ohtani lasted just 4.2 innings in his first start, he struck out nine of the 19 batters he faced. Thus, Ohtani to beat his projected strikeout total is our first play of the day.

Because we expect Ohtani to pitch well today, we are also backing the first five innings under. It takes two to ensure such a bet cashes, which means we are also putting faith in Texas’ Dane Dunning. Ohtani, Mike Trout, and Anthony Rendon are a combined 4-for-16 with no RBIs against Dunning. His ability to limit Los Angeles’ three bats again will go a long way in lowering the Angels’ offensive ceiling.

The under has cashed in Los Angeles’ last four games and is 6-2-1 in the previous nine meetings in Texas between these teams. However, we will take the bullpens out of the equation and hope to cash our under bet mid-game.
