New York Mets vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction
The New York Mets are 9-3 to start the season. The Mets have played four different teams and now have made sure that they won't lose a single one of those series'. However, the Mets won’t have manager Buck Showalter in the dugout, as he’ll be having a medical procedure done. He's been important to this team so far with decision-making. So that's going to be a bit of a blow. The Giants will send out Carlos Rodon, who was one of the prized acquisitions for the Giants earlier in the off-season. Rodon is currently 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA to start the season along with a WHIP of .75. He's also struck out 21 on the year. Looking back at last year in combination with this year, Rodon had a 3.50 xFIP with 35.4% strikeouts and 6.9% walks. He's never one to earn a large number of ground balls but does limit line-drive contact at a very solid rate of under 19%. Meanwhile, the Mets lineup will have plenty of right-handed bats that can do damage against lefties including Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, J.D. Davis, Pete Alonso, and Eduardo Escobar. All of those bats are hitting high ISO power numbers and are right-handed bats. To spotlight a couple of those hitters, Alonso has a .325 ISO and .379 wOBA against lefties while Escobar, who is a switch hitter, has a .255 ISO and wOBA of .375. Just like the Giants, the Mets added starting pitching during the off-season as well. The Mets brought in Chris Bassitt via trade with the Athletics and he hasn’t disappointed either. Bassitt is 2-0 with a .075 ERA. He’s struck out 24 batters and has a WHIP of .67 through two starts. However, if you look at his full body of work, Bassitt has a 4.11 xFIP with 25.3% strikeouts and 6.1% walks. He’s not getting a high amount of grounders and allows nearly 22% line drives when a ball is hit into play. There are times when Bassitt struggled against lefties last year. Dating back to last year, he's giving up a .164 ISO. That's not a terrible number, but something to think about. The Giants have five lefties in the lineup that can do real damage against righties. The lefties include Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt, Joc Pederson, Brandon Crawford, and Steven Duggar. With that said, there’s just more potential in the Giants lineup going up against Bassitt when it comes to power from the left side. I like the Giants to earn one back tonight.
