The juice here is a bit high but I think it’s worth it. Last time we bet this it was almost a 1st inning cash. Cole can allow 4 hits and still have his best start of the season, we don’t even need him to struggle. Cole has been bad this year, there’s no argument for that. On the other hand, he is still Gerrit Cole and he’s due a good start. I think his best start of the year is today but he could go 6 or 7 innings and allow 4 hits still and it would be a great start. This number is just too low.
I see where the concern lies, his walks last game against Detroit were insane. Walking 5 people in less than 2 innings is absolutely bonkers. I just don’t see that happening again, he should be peppering the strike zone today whether they are for outs or hits. Cleveland has batting .288 vs righties this year and funny enough are also batting .288 on the road. Both of these are much better than their home splits and against lefty splits. Guardians are 2nd in the league in total batting average only trailing the Cubs because of yesterdays 21 run clinic.
The historic stats of these Guardians batters vs Cole don’t present a great case for us but this isn’t the same Cole that we saw in Houston and Pittsburgh. With the way Cole has looked this year I can’t imagine him being his old dominant self. I think he has good baseball left to play, but he has reached his peak. I feel like the only way we lose is if he starts walking everybody again but I just can’t imagine him having two starts in a row with that bad of locating. Going with my “law of averages” mindset here that has luckily been working thus far.
