Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction: Can Merrill Kelly Continue Pitching Lights Out?

The Los Angeles Dodgers started the season a bit slow. But it took no time for the Dodgers to get back to their old selves. Los Angeles is now 11-4 on the season and will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight, starting a new series. The pitching matchup looks exciting on paper but with the Los Angeles Dodgers' offense, anything is possible in this game.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction

Walker Buehler will take the mound for the Dodgers to start this new series against the Diamondbacks. So far, this season, Buehler has not pitched all that well. Buehler has given up 17 hits in 15.2 innings along with seven runs, two home runs, and six walks. Buehler has given up multiple runs in each of his first three starts but still has some of the better numbers in baseball dating back to last season. Buehler has a 3.85 xFIP with 24.7% strikeouts dating back to last year. He's limited power, has held teams off the base paths, and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball in recent memory. He's going to get back on track and there's no better team to face than Arizona when you want to get back on track. The Diamondbacks have a .173 ISO and wOBA of .333 dating back to last season with the projected lineup. However, Arizona also strikes out nearly 24% of the time and has just one player in the lineup that has inflated numbers against righties, which is Seth Beer (in 36 plate appearances). On the other hand, Merrill Kelly has been tremendous for the Diamondbacks in his first three starts. He's allowed just one run in 15.1 innings pitched and has 18 strikeouts to five walks. Still, Kelly has allowed 13 hits in those 15.1 innings and will fold sooner rather than later. Dating back to last season, Kelly has a 4.48 xFIP with 19.9% strikeouts. He's also allowed a .341 wOBA and ISO of .175 to righties dating back to last year and will face some of the best righties in the game between Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, Justin Turner, and Will Smith. All of those guys have highly inflated numbers against righties from the right side and should have major success against Kelly. Kelly isn't finishing the season with a .59 ERA. He's going to allow some runs. The Dodgers are the lineup to put him in his place.
