It’s not often that less than a month into the MLB season we see two pitchers face one another a second time. Here is my prediction and pick for the Cincinnati Reds vs San Diego Padres game.

Cincinnati Reds vs San Diego Padres Prediction

This could also be found under “first half” on many books, they’re the same thing. This is a bet I’ve been looking at since last night and me sleeping on it only made me like it more. San Diego is an all-around superior team to Cincinnati in just about every category. These two teams had a series already where Padres swept 3-0 but more importantly outscored Cincinnati 11-2 in the first five innings combined of those three games. Cincinnati hold a brutal 3-13 record as San Diego is a cool 10-7. One could argue that Cincinnati is due for some positive regression but tonight doesn’t feel like the night that happens with Musgrove on the mound.

Musgrove and Sanmartin is the same matchup from the April 19th game between these two teams. In that game, we saw Padres end the 5th inning with a 5-1 lead. That is great but we don’t even need that much of a lead, I will gladly take a one-run advantage to cash a sweaty one. Sanmartin is an interesting pitcher, it’s tough to know which version you’ll get. Against the Dodgers, he looked outstanding but against other competition he looks very hittable, I think he allows a few runs today and we head into the end of the fifth with at least a one-run advantage.

Musgrove has only allowed 14 hits in 66 at-bats against these Reds batters which is fantastic. Only has a .212 batting average against him overall and he looks very in his element this season. The righty is enjoying a 1.89 ERA thus far on the season and is slowly making his way up the rankings of top pitchers in the league. I feel like the Reds turn it around at some point but not against him. Cincinnati has only scored 13 runs in their last nine games which is putrid averaging not even a run and a half. If SD can put up 2-3 runs in the first five innings I like our odds.
