Tampa Bay Rays vs Seattle Mariners Prediction

Tonight, Seattle is going with Logan Gilbert. So far, Gilbert has been incredible in all of his starts. All three of his starts this season have led the Mariners to a win, and he’s only allowed a single earned run in 16.2 innings pitched. Gilbert did make two starts against the Rays last season, allowing three and four earned runs, but thankfully most of those dangerous bats are no longer in the lineup. The Rays’ bats haven’t warmed up enough this season to pose a serious threat to Gilbert’s success.

Tampa Bay has Matt Wisler slated to start before right-handed pitcher, Josh Fleming. Wisler won’t stay in more than an inning, so Fleming will likely make the majority of the start. In his two starts this season, Fleming hasn’t looked great— he allowed three earned runs to both the A’s and the Cubs. His only decent appearance was a relief stint against the Orioles, which isn’t anything to brag about. Still, in all of his three appearances this season, Fleming has only pitched 3.1 innings, so I don’t think he’ll go very deep tonight, especially if the Mariners are able to hit him well.

We saw this pitching matchup twice last season, with Fleming and Gilbert each picking up a win and a loss for their teams. The Mariners have won all three of Gilbert’s starts this season, and considering how Fleming has struggled, I’ll back Seattle. Both teams have decent bullpens that will be rested coming into the game tonight, but Seattle’s relievers have been better. It’s very likely that the bullpens could be determining factor in an otherwise close game, so I’ll back the relievers with the slightly better ERA. Last season, the Mariners went 6-1 versus the Rays. Tampa Bay has dropped four straight first games in a series. Meanwhile, the Mariners are 4-1 in the first game of a series this season. Back the Mariners behind Gilbert on the money line at +115 for the value.
