Tuesday's Early MLB Looks: Watch Out for Josiah Gray, Brandon Woodruff
I know it's early but we need to be thinking about one thing right now; gambling. That's just how gambling works. We don't have to actually bet anything yet but it would damn sure be nice to have a plan. When we see MLB lineups come out later, we need to be able to pounce. There are guys right now that are just waiting. Refreshing Twitter (or another site we don't even know about yet). Like ninjas. The second the teams put out their lineups, they already know what the move is. That has to be a good feeling. Here's how they do it. They go through everything BEFORE the lineups come out. If they're betting pitcher strikeout props, they already know the strikeout artists they want to see in the lineups. That way when these guys do make an appearance, they jump on them. Savage stuff. Here are a couple of situations we should be looking at today.
Josiah Gray - Washington Nationals
What I like to do every morning is wake up and immediately look to see who the Miami Marlins are playing. I'm not a Marlins fan. Never really have been. Closest I've ever been is when Charles Johnson played catcher for them back in the day. We both grew up in Ft. Pierce, Florida so it was kind of a thing. He was older though, plus he went to Westwood so the love didn't run all that deep, but it was still a little bit there. Anyways, fast forward to today, and we are looking at a bunch of strikeout guys up and down this lineup.
I'm not picking on these guys. We're talking about a team who has struck out 65 times in their last 204 at-bats. What the hell is that all about? They legit have eight guys who have a 30% strikeout rate in the last week (Bryan De La Cruz, Jesus Sanchez, Avisail Garcia, Jon Berti, Garrett Cooper, Payton Henry, Jazz Chisholm, and Jesus Aguilar). I'm counting Jesus Aguilar even though he's at 29.6%. Whatever. I'm seeing Gray at 5.5 for -132 over at FanDuel. Depending on the lineup we see, we may want to see how far we can take him on the escalator.
Brandon Woodruff - Milwaukee Brewers
If you need a little evening action (afternoon for you west coasters), Brandon Woodruff might be worth a look. Woodruff will be teeing off at 6:35pm ET in Pittsburgh tonight and he's coming off of a nine-strikeout performance. The thing is, he's being priced at 6.5 +120 at DraftKings. He started a bit slow in terms of whiffs this season only getting four in his first 8.2 innings of work but he looks to be kind of back at this point.
There is a catch with him though as his nine K performance came against this same Pirates team. I hate going back to back starts on anyone but here we are. No stone unturned over here. It's just that the Pirates look like a blindfolded team at the plate over the last week. We're talking 59 strikeouts in their last 191 at-bats. That's terrible. I would love to see six or seven of these guys today; Hoy Park, Anthony Alford, Jake Marisnick, Cole Tucker, Bryan Reynolds, Roberto Perez, Josh VanMeter, Michael Chavis, and Daniel Vogelbach. If that happens, Woodruff could sit at least seven of them down.
