The Diamondbacks looked very impressive at home against the Dodgers behind some very strong pitching performances, but will it continue tonight on the road against a solid Cardinals squad? Let's break it down.

Cardinals vs. Diamondbacks Line Movement

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction

The Diamondbacks have looked better than their usual selves over the first few weeks of the season as they are a very respectable 8-11 on the year including wins over the Dodgers, Padres, and Mets. They have been having success on the mound as Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen have formed a very solid 1-2 punch at the head of their rotation. But tonight, they are fairly thin on pitching and will be starting Humberto Castellanos who has functioned as an opener, a reliever, and a long-term starter as well.

Castellanos has gotten off to a solid start as he has a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings pitched and faced very formidable lineups in the Mets and Padres. Castellanos has looked pretty good early on, but I think he is due for some negative regression tonight.

We saw the Cardinals' bats finally break out of their slump in their series finale against the Mets as they scored 10 runs and came back to win after being down 4-1 early in the second inning. I think the Cardinals are going to carry that momentum over into a strong offensive performance here at home.

The Diamondbacks have also been very bad offensively on the road. They have a team batting average of .204 and have a lowly on-base percentage of .287 in their road games this season. The offense across the league is down as a whole due to the dead balls but these numbers are still well below league average.

Dakota Hudson gets the nod on the bump for the Cardinals tonight and he struggled a bit in his first 2 starts but really figured it out in his last performance against the Reds. In that start, Hudson threw 6 innings and only allowed 2 hits. His biggest problem was control as he walked 4 hitters. I expect Hudson to have much better control in this start and limit the traffic on the basepaths as the Diamondbacks do not draw a lot of walks and are also not a big power-hitting team. The Diamondbacks have also not seen Hudson too often as their lineup tonight only has a combined 9 total at-bats and have gone 2-9 without an extra-base hit.

It can be tough facing a guy for the first time and I think the D-backs are going to struggle the first few times through the order tonight. This game also features one of my favorite line dynamics as the Cardinals are still very heavily favored even though Castellanos has a lower ERA than Hudson. With that being said, I am rolling with Cardinals F5 -0.5 at -115 and Cardinals Full Game -1 at -120 for 1U each as my most confident MLB picks of the night.
