The Cleveland Guardians will send out Shane Bieber for his fifth start of the season. Bieber has allowed seven earned runs in 22.1 innings pitched. He's also struck out 22 while walking just five through four games.
The right-hander still has a 4.12 xFIP but is striking out 25.6% of batters while walking just 4.7% of batters. Power to righties has been a bit high with righties having an ISO of .204 in 57 plate appearances on the season.
However, the Athletics don't have consistent righties against righties in the lineup. The only two major threats that have been consistent against righties are Jed Lowrie and Seth Brown. Of course, Sean Murphy has potential but agaisnt righties, he's struggled miserably.
The Athletics have a .132 ISO and wOBA of .296 against righties this season with 44.2% ground balls. Bieber should have a field day today.
On the other hand, Cole Irvin will take the mound for the Athletics. The left-hander has a 4.91 xFIP and has struggled to earn many strikeouts. Irvin, like Bieber, is allowing power from righties at a bit of a higher rate, with a .212 ISO. Lefties also have a .167 ISO, which is about average.
The Guardians' lineup isn't all that better but they have more threats going up against a weaker pitcher. The Guardians have Jose Ramirez, Own Miller, and Josh Naylor, who have all hit lefties at a very high rate throughout the start of the season.
I'll take my chances with the Guardians and Bieber in the first five innings.
