Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction
The Astros finally come back home after a long road trip at Texas and against the Blue Jays where they really struggled offensively. They have been dealing with injuries and inconsistent play from most of their big bats including Tucker and Alvarez, but Tucker has really been coming on over his last five to seven games and may have finally turned a corner. Over his last nine games, Tucker has raised his season average from .087 to .250 and has been driving in runs at a very high rate. He has 11 RBIs and five extra-base hits in those games and finally looks like his old self.
The Mariners will start Marco Gonzales who looked excellent in his first start of the season against the Astros as he only allowed four hits and one earned run scattered across seven innings of work. The Mariners won that game in dominating fashion by a score of 11-1 and never had a shot in that game. While Marco Gonzales shined in that start, he has really struggled in every other appearance this season. Not including that start against the Astros, he has allowed 14 runs and five earned runs across seven innings while allowing 13 hits and four walks as well. That is a lot of traffic on the basepaths to navigate around so the question tonight will be, can he recreate that same success from his first start against the Astros again tonight? I do not believe so.
One thing I have talked about in some of my articles is the recurring event of the same pitching matchups in the same relative amount of time. Tonight, we have Marco Gonzales for the Mariners and Jake Odorizzi going for the Astros and that was the same pitching matchup in the game a few weeks ago where the Mariners won 11-1. Usually, the results of these same matchups flip from start to start so Gonzales and the Mariners got the upper hand in the first meeting, and I think the Astros will have the advantage here. Even though Odorizzi struggled in that start, he has solid career numbers against the Mariners as five of the hitters in their lineup tonight have hit .250 or below against him.
I also expect a much more focused effort from Odorizzi tonight as that last start has to be on his mind and think he will pitch with an added edge tonight with a sort of revenge factor. Odorizzi also pitched really well in his last outing against the Rangers as he only allowed one hit through six innings and looked very solid. I think the Astros are going to hit Gonzales quite well tonight and also think Odorizzi will be able to hold the Mariners down much better than his last outing against them, so with that being said, I am rolling with Astros F5 ML at -130 and Full Game ML at -130 both for 1U each as my most confident MLB Picks of the day.
